Subject:

Morgan Hill Application to LAFCO – SUPPORT

Your Letter:

Dear LAFCO Commissioner (Insert name of Commissioner, if possible)

I urge you to vote in support the City of Morgan Hill’s application to expand their Urban Service Area to accommodate the educational needs of the community.

It is a well-known fact that over 400 high school students in the area commute to private Catholic high schools outside of South County to pursue their educational goals. This has an adverse impact on our community in a variety of ways such as increased traffic, pollution, and hours spent traveling instead of studying or participating in co-curricular activities to name a few.

The expansion of the Urban Service Area is critical because there is not a parcel or collection of contiguous parcels available within the existing Urban Service Area that would meet the guidelines of the California Department of Education for the acreage required for a comprehensive high school.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. Please approve the City of Morgan Hill’s application for this expansion to the Urban Service Area.

Sincerely,

On December 5, 2018, Santa Clara LAFCO will decide whether or not we can proceed with our dream of the South County Catholic High School. Make sure the LAFCO Commissioners know that South County residents support the school and they should, too.

We support the South County Catholic High School because:

  • 450 kids are traveling up to 90 miles daily to attend other Catholic high schools in the Diocese.
  • By pushing kids out of the community, we are contributing to additional gridlock on our freeway and pollution in our environment
  • These kids are the future of our community and we want them to continue feeling connected and contributing to the community
  • There is a recognized need for an additional high school to meet the educational needs of the South County communities. This high school will be a positive addition to the mix of educational options for South County families
  • The high schools in the Diocese of San Jose have a long history of educating students from very diverse backgrounds, Catholic and non-Catholic.
  • The South County Catholic High School has already created an endowment for financial aid to ensure that qualified students have a place in our school.

LAFCO should support the South County Catholic High School because:

  • The application is consistent with LAFCO policies that permit expansion of the Urban Service Area.
  • There is not a parcel or contiguous parcels within the Morgan Hill City Limits that meets the established guidelines of the California Department of Education for the size of a comprehensive high school.
  • The Diocese has committed to a 1:1 mitigation of the property to preserve and maintain agricultural lands adequate for farming or open space.

Re: Morgan Hill Application to LAFCO – SUPPORT

LAFCO Chairperson Ken Yeager,

I support the City of Morgan Hill’s application to expand their Urban Service Area to accommodate the educational needs of the community. It is a well-known fact that over 400 high school students in the area commute to private Catholic high schools outside of South County to pursue their educational goals. This has an adverse impact on the community in a variety of ways such as increased traffic, pollution, and hours spent traveling instead of studying or participating in co-curricular activities to name a few.

As the high cost of living continues to push Silicon Valley residents into South County, we can expect that the demand for housing and educational opportunities will increase. The application to expand the Urban Service Area includes a parcel that has enough acreage to build a high school that will serve South County students who seek a high-quality Catholic education that will not require them to spend hours each day traveling outside the area to pursue their education. We can attest that the expansion of the Urban Service Area is critical because there is not a parcel or collection of contiguous parcels available within the existing Urban Service Area that would meet the guidelines of the California Department of Education for the acreage required for a comprehensive high school.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. Please approve the City of Morgan Hill’s application for this expansion to the Urban Service Area.

Sincerely,
